Little Fishes Allotment Garden

Autumn Newsletter 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back – we hope you have had a restful Summer, despite so much rain!

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome those who have recently joined us, both in nursery and preschool. Everyone is settling well and making new friends.

We are thrilled to announce the children have been enjoying the new Allotment Garden throughout September and have even enjoyed their first charity cake sale with a neighbouring allotment-holder! 😀

Over the Summer period we have prepared the ground and erected a good sized summer house for shelter, storage and changing/pottying needs.

We have also surrounded the whole 18m x 10m site with a sturdy picket fence to keep everyone safe and secure whilst using our new outdoors area.

We have been discussing with the children their ideas of what they would like to include over the coming months and into next year – they have created some ideas booklets and come up with some excellent (and surprisingly realistic) ideas! 🙂

Although at present it is pretty much a blank canvas, the children have had so much fun just enjoying the space

and playing running and jumping games 🙂

Just over half of the area is laid to lawn with the area closest the shed covered in wood chip – this will form the growing area and we will be creating separate beds for the children to start preparing for next year’s fruit and vegetables.

Surrounding the lawned area we have a border where the children can grow plants and flowers.

Already installed is a covered digging area and we have plans for a mud kitchen, alongside an additional sandpit. We have installed a small pond which we hope will encourage frogs and other wildlife. We will also be seeding a wildflower garden area in which we plan to place some bug hotels we make with the children. Early next year we plan to include some willow structures and start getting some produce planted. We also want to introduce a fire pit and den building opportunities as well as just allowing space and time for running, jumping, rolling, chasing and generally having loads of fun!!

This should leave some generous scope to grow and develop in line with ideas and available resources over the coming months and years.

If you would like to see our risk assessments associated with the space, and the travel to and from, or have any questions or concerns please do get in touch.

We hope you will be happy with this excellent addition to our provision and see the benefits for your children, alongside those already enjoyed within our lovely little nursery and preschool.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support, your generous donations of pre-loved needed toys and clothes (always very gratefully received!) and for allowing us to care for and help educate your little ones 🙂

Over the next few months we will be holding cake sales to raise money for resources for the allotment, any donations would be very much apprectiated!

Date for Diary: 30th Oct – 5th Nov 2017 – Guy Fawkes / Bonfire Night

Throughout the week we will be making firework pictures and displays, exploring light, colour and sounds, and talking about how to stay safe whilst having fun!

Date for Diary: 11th November – Remembrance Day

During early November we will be making poppies with the children and talking about why we wear them and how doing so helps support the men and women who have been injured, and to honour and respect those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our country and for our freedom.  Lest We Forget.

Date for Diary: Photographer – Monday 6th November (morning)

We have a lovely lady called Stefanie Wallace coming to take our individual photos in November, which make lovely Christmas Presents for family and friends. Stefanie lives locally with her husband and young son at Chivenor and is an excellent photographer – she likes to take time to build a rapport with the children which makes for lovely natural photos 😊 If your child is not normally in that session and you would like them to have their photos taken please speak to Yasmine who will arrange a suitable timeslot to minimise waiting times.
