Winter / Early Spring News
Winter / Early Spring Term 2018
We hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and New Year!
A very warm welcome to our new children and pre-school starters (and their families!) All have all been settling in well into their new surroundings and making new friends 😊 We have also been learning, or re-learning, our ‘Golden Rules’ to help promote our inclusive, safe and friendly environment.
We have a range of fun learning opportunities for your children to be involved in…
Throughout January and February our focus is ‘Patterns, shapes and colours’
We will be exploring out and about looking at different shaped signs and traffic light colours also incorporating some safety measures in crossing the road and how to stay safe when out for walks.
In Pre-School they will be learning about colours and the effects of mixing them together to see what colours they make through activities such as ‘The skittle experiment’ which will be very interesting for the children! Pre-school will also be involved in many other activities such as face painting, animal foot printing, creating a shaving foam rainbow and also making their own patterned Elmer elephants!
Our Tweenies are joining in the fun, using a range of tools and resources to support their mark-making techniques to create simple shapes and patterns. These include string painting, Lego block printing, potato printing, rollers to create patterns, big and small brushes to paint and also shape drawing in shaving foam and gloop. We are also working on the development of handling drawing and writing equipment, such as pens, pencils and crayons, by using techniques such as the ‘palmer grip’ and the ‘pincer grip’.
We would like to thank the tweenies parents for their contributions with the parent home assessment forms, this information is very useful in updating your child’s development file in what they can do at home and what they can do in nursery! It also helps us in planning activities and opportunities to support your child’s next steps! 😊
Our babies will be engaging in activities focusing primarily on their senses. Sound, Smell and touch are the key areas which are focused on and this is achieved through water play, shaving foam, sand, treasure baskets and painting activities.
Over the next few months we will be looking at weather changes from Winter to Spring and speaking about the change in climate, as well as going on walks in the village, along the tarka trail and to our Allotment Garden. At the allotment garden we will be starting to plant various flowers and enjoying some sensory play in the sand and digging in the soil. This also supports a prime area of their development (Communication and Language) through talking about their experiences and sharing stories with friends.
Play helps young children to learn and develop their physical, social, emotional and intellectual skills through doing and talking – Why not join in at home by planning day trips for your child to explore freely and speaking to them about changes in the environment around them, and perhaps your feelings as well as their own.
Our activities and experiences change from day to day and are designed to be flexible to adapt to the children’s interests and current events as they arise. If you would like to have a look at any of our planning or talk through activities in more detail, our friendly staff will be happy to share.
A few reminders:
- We will be planning trips to our allotment and using the outdoor resources in all weathers so please help us by providing your child with a waterproof coat every day and suitable footwear i.e. wellies (we do have spare if need be) Thank you. 😊
- Please can all children wear suitable shoes that can be easily be put on and removed. We aim to promote their independence in being able to achieve their goals, as this develops their confidence in doing things for themselves – do ask if any questions.
- Water is a key element for your child’s learning and health, can we please ask you to provide water in your child’s drinks bottle rather than squash.
- It would be very much appreciated if you could return any clothes that your child may have borrowed. Thank you 😊
